Russia
Russia was ruled by a Communist regime from 1917 until 1991, otherwise known as the Soviet Union. Because of this long history of tyranny, Russia can still stir up mixed emotions with many Americans. Individuals from older generations still vividly recall a time when the Soviets posed a serious threat to the safety of the United States, especially during the Cold War era. Since the end of Communist rule in Russia things have changed and Russia has become a nation with friendlier relations with the Unites States, as well as other countries. The new Russia is significantly more peaceful, less oppressed, and much more of a welcoming travel destination than is has been in the past.
